An Episcopal Ministry to Convalescent Hospitals

The mission of An Episcopal Ministry to Convalescent Hospitals is to provide a supportive presence to East Bay facility residents, their caregivers, and their families. AEMCH members visit residents and organize worship opportunities for them, hold educational workshops, offer training classes for volunteers, and thus promote individual and congregational ministries.

Convalescent Home Ministry

For more than 25 years, a team from St. Mark’s has held Sunday worship services at Berkeley Pines Care Center. All of us rejoice in bringing the message of God’s love and care to our congregation at Berkeley Pines—in playing familiar hymns, in preaching, in leading the prayers, and especially in sharing in the residents’ lives.

The service begins with the pianist playing familiar hymns to set a worshipful mood, as we set up a Cross and candles, and gather and greet our congregation. There are prayers, the Twenty-Third Psalm, a reading from the Bible, a homily, and hymns. After the service ends, our pianist again plays favorite hymns as we take time to check in with each of our congregants and pray with them if needed. The prayers are all from the Book of Common Prayer (a couple are simplified), but the hymns are a bit Methodist. Bob Williams, Jan Robitscher, and The Rev. Scott Sinclair fashioned the new service.

Our current first-Sunday team includes Roberta (piano and preacher), Gwen Gaynor (service leader), and Bob; our third-Sunday service includes Meg (piano), Jan (service leader), Scott (preacher), and Bob. We hope soon to find enough volunteers to resume our fourth Sunday service. To get involved, call the office at 510.848.0905 and leave contact information with the office staff or voice mail.
